March 9, 1946: Kathleen Vera Johnson Barrett of The Lizard in Cornwall tells a police officer she was the victim of an indecent assault “probably amounting to rape” in her own home by an airman. As she was married with two kids, one might assume she knew the difference between a grope and an actual rape.
She attends an identification parade, but after a second visit to the aerodrome she comes clean: she’d been having it off with a local man named Richards, and was afraid he’d made her pregnant.
When she appeared at the Penzance Quarter Sessions the following May, the judge was understanding, probably a great deal more so than her husband.
