June 1995: Karla Masello is allegedly raped at knifepoint at Danvers, Massachusetts. After a thorough investigation, the lead detective asks:

“I thought to myself, how could this happen and nobody saw it in a parking lot that was jammed with people?”

When David Woytovich confronts the non-victim with the lack of supporting evidence, she admits she made up the story

“to draw sympathy from her estranged husband”.

She is charged with filing a false report, but

“Few police departments have filed charges against women who falsely report rape, Woytovich said. He explained such actions send the wrong signal to legitimate victims”.
