February 6, 2012: San Diego man Scott Espinosa is arrested on numerous charges including two counts of rape. His accuser, Leslie Peterson, is allegedly a 14 year old girl. He spends 19 months behind bars before the truth comes out. See this video at around 11 minutes 20 seconds. The so-called child victim was a mother of three, a drug addict, and an habitual liar.

While Espinosa was in prison, his mother committed suicide believing her son to be a rapist, something that affected him deeply. He was said to have been facing 35 years behind bars for the multiple rape and pimping of a 14 year old girl. After a successful appeal direct to the judge, he was offered a deal - plead guilty to pandering or take your chances with a retrial. This was little more than blackmail, but is typical of the American criminal justice system. (See for example the by now notorious case of Brian Banks). He took the deal because he said he couldn’t trust the jury to get it right. He had actually put up this woman at his apartment because she told him she was homeless, and he felt sorry for her. File this one under NO GOOD DEED GOES UNPUNISHED.
