June 2001: In the North of England, student Andrew Bond is accused of raping a slightly older woman at his Seaforth apartment.
By the time the police arrived, her make-up was running, her clothes were dishevelled, and her underwear had been ripped to shreds. She told them in a distressed voice she’d been raped. She’d met him a bar, gone back to his apartment, he emerged naked from the bathroom, dragged her into the bedroom, and raped her. That was half an hour after the assault, at a relative’s house. Looks bad, doesn’t it? But shortly before his trial was due to start, an eagle-eyed member of his legal team named Julie Wardil was viewing CCTV footage that showed the accuser leaving in the elevator; as she does so, she pulls her knickers out of her handbag, and begins tearing them with her hands. The case against Andrew Bond was dropped; his false accuser was not prosecuted, and remains anonymous.
The scan below is from the Daily Mail, February 14, 2002, page 44; I have since managed to obtain a copy (the best copy possible) of the full article. If you are unable to read it as is, save to disk then use your PDF viewer to resize it.
[For the avoidance of doubt, the Andrew Bond alluded to above is not to be confused with a convicted paedophile named Andrew Bond.]
