February 2010: Nadia Naz of Birkby reports a man for rape; he spends 30 hours in custody, and is charged with two counts of rape, one of assault. Shortly, she retracts and later telephones a police officer telling him the allegations are untrue. When she appears at Bradford Crown Court in August 2010, Mr Justice Jonathan Hall tells her:

“I wholly accept that what you did was a last resort having nowhere to turn and being frightened and vulnerable.

You now know there are people who want to help you. You don’t need to do this.”

Did I miss something? The judge said he accepted she had been a victim of sustained abuse, degradation and humiliation. By whom? At any rate, she received a slap on the wrist.
