The young woman in this case was willing at the time, but claimed later that she screamed. Nobody heard her. Mr Lawrence spent a week on remand, and eventually the case was dropped with little or no fanfare. He told the journalist:
“The papers don’t even have to report that the case has been dropped against me, so everyone still thinks I am a rapist”.
Welcome to rape culture, dude.
His anonymous accuser said she left a public house around midnight on September 13. She appears to have been drunk, to put it very mildly. Elsewhere it was reported that he said they knew each other, she denied this, but kept changing her story. Although she was clearly not telling the truth, this case shows yet again how dangerous it is in the current climate for any man to have sex with a woman who has consumed any quantity of alcohol, because he will be held responsible for his actions even if he is blind drunk, while she will not be held responsible for hers. Having said that, this bloke should have at least had the decency to walk her home.
This report which includes the aforementioned interview, also appeared in the Gazette & Herald.
