January 3, 1993: A woman claims to have been raped at knifepoint in the fitting room of a San Diego store, a report that is said to have generated both a $10,000 reward and more publicity tha all the reported rapes in San Diego – real and imagined – the previous year. Later that month it is revealed that the only place this rape happened was in the victim’s head.

This report appeared in the Los Angeles Times. Most interesting is the claim therein that she recanted only after being promised she would not face prosecution. Since when did the police in America or anywhere else allow suspects to dictate to them in such a fashion?
