CROYDON Rape Statistics 2008-early 2009

The article below appeared on page 4 of the March 27, 2009 issue of the Croydon Advertiser; the statistics given are not for the whole of 2008, nor, clearly, for the whole of March 2009, although it appears to indicate so; end of February 2009?

In 2009, Croydon had a population of slightly over 350,000, which means the number of rapes, if true, is scandalous, even though the police officer concerned said rapes in Croydon were relatively low.

Look at what else he said, stranger rapes are even lower, in other words, most reports of rape are by women who know the men they accuse. Also, note the sanction detection rate of only 36 percent; in other words, in 64 percent of cases, no action is taken because the police do not believe there is sufficient evidence, or in plain English, almost certainly no rape occurred. So of the 160 people who reported being raped in the 12 months to February 2009, over a hundred were almost certainly not raped.
